Ready – Aim – Action

Filed under: Uncategorized — Will Wilson @ 9:08 am

Greetings again!

We need action and activity on the new web to work the bugs out and learn how to use it.  It reminds me why I was fired by my third grade guitar teacher after three months.  I never practiced.

We still have a lot on our plate.

  • Bret Moore is soon seeking input on a questionnaire addressing PRx
  • Eve Graham Weber has been notified that she will deploy from  Okinowa

Ready – Aim – Action

Filed under: Uncategorized — Will Wilson @ 8:36 pm

Greetings again!

We need action and activity on the new web to work the bugs out and learn how to use it.  It reminds me why my third grade guitar teacher fired me after three months.  I never practiced.

We still have a lot on our plate:

Ø    Bret Moore is soon seeking input on a questionnaire addressing PRx

Ø    Eve Graham Weber has been notified that she will deploy from Okinawa to Iraq.  Eve is our current Practice Committee chair and will need some help and support. She deploys before our August meeting

Ø    Bret and Eve were our representatives a the Summit on the Future of Psychology and they may have interesting things to report soon

Ø    Member and student awards have been named

Ø    I am still working on:

o      Award to be named for Bob Nichols to recognize contributions to Military Practice Psychology

o      Recommendation to move the tenure of president and the other division 19 positions from the summer to January.

Ø    I had advocated for committees on Research/Engineering psychology; I/O psychology; and Service to the military. With the advent of the web, there are separate blogs for these areas and that could suffice and help us identify the level of energy at each of these levels. At the recommendation of members, there is also and ergonomics blog.

Ø    This is an early list of those who might serve as the moderator for each of the blogs. If you see a gap and are available, would love to have you take it over.  If you do not know how to get established as a blog moderator, please email Steve Hirko: Steve Hirko shirko@innmediaconcepts.com

President’s section – incumbent

Practice section -  Eve Grahm Weber and colleague

Research and Engineer section “Hirsch, Michele CIV USA TRADOC” <michele.hirsch@us.army.mil>

I/O section – “Truhon, Stephen” <truhons@apsu.edu>

Support for the military section – Chris Truhe

Human Factors/ ergonomics -

Membership – Sena Garven

PRx section – Bret Moore

Psychology addressing Terrorism to include Interrogation – Larry James / Bill Strickland

Simulation application in military psychology – Hank Taylor (hopeful)

CE programs – upcoming and options – Lori LaCivita / Paula Fremont

Ø    Would love to see the division 19 ethics consultation committee have a blog where they could help us identify places where we need some lessons.  I found the recent Cheney TV presentations to be quite puzzling and certainly seemed to draw out that ethical dilemma I think we face as a Nation.  Just stop calling what we used to call torture, “enhanced” interrogation techniques. I understand the dilemma – but it seems to me that if we have to invent words for the new modern “interrogation” techniques why weren’t they ok to be used before.  And…” it all depends on what your definition of ‘is’ is.”  Not so long ago, the measure of behavior began with legality.  But that was just the starting point. The next test to be passed was – is it ethical?  Even that wasn’t enough. The last test was: “Is it the right thing to do”?  If we have to change and behind language, it seems to me we knew the answer and sought to simply quibble.

Best to all.

I am out of the loop for the next 10 days.

Onward,

Will

A big step forward

Filed under: From The President — Will Wilson @ 7:31 pm

First let me thank 3 very significant people responsible to our movement to this kick off:

Steve Shenouda kept us going as our “webmaster” for many years — and he did it for the love us of as a grad student

Paul Bartone – the energizer bunny of division 19 – took the project of the development of a new web site into his deep bag of things to get done and made this happen

Steve Hirko has proved to be an excellent partner for our needs and has created this new web site.

I think it is important that all three be recognized for their commitment to division 19 and getting this up and running.

Our first task is to take a look at this site and identify those things that we really like about it and potentials we see.  The blog section has been developed to provide current and frequently interaction on things that well affect division 19 as well as those aspects of division 19 that interest you most. We have tried to anticipate what those categories might be and provided specific sections. I have sought to identify individual who are willing to administer each section of the blog.  This role is important because it is the administrator who can bring the energy to his or her section and who can seek to facilitate discussions there.  These sections of the blog are useful only as we use them – keep them on target to needs of all those interested in each section — and keep them active and current.  Also identify those areas of glitches or omissions.

Hopefully this will lead to ideas, information, innovation, collaboration, and more effective communication.  Most of you will not be surprised to hear me write that I believe we are a division made up of different interests, work, and challenges that affect us differently.  The establishment of a blog with different sections provides us the ability to identify those characteristics through the topics we discuss and address in each section. Time and experience will allow this to shake out and see where our energy really lies.

I hope you realize that we are living in “interesting times”.  We need your involvement; we need members; we need more people like those who make daily contributions to the division; we need to make a difference.

Congratulations to all who made this web site possible — and certainly not forgotten is Armando Estrada who, with his vision and excellence as the current journal editor, brought us funds that let initiatives like this be established.

Blog Now Operational

Hello All,

The Division 19 Blog is now operational. In order to post comments on the Division 19 Blog you must register. The system will generate a password and email it to you. Once you receive the system generated password you can log in and change it so it is easily remembered.

In order for a blog to be successful it needs authors willing to post on a frequent basis in order to keep it fresh and new. All of the categories are now operational but, Each category should have (1) author. If you would like to oversee the discussions on a particular category, please email me directly. I will set you up as an Author and email you with your log in information.

This is a great way for members and non-members to discuss topics within the Military Psychology field.
